Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has decided against meeting with the sole commissioner and counsel of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) regarding the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This choice comes after the COI requested a meeting to address ongoing allegations concerning Malimali’s appointment.

The COI, formed last October, was tasked with assessing whether the appointment process adhered to principles of integrity, fairness, and transparency. In his response to the COI’s request, Rabuka indicated that he saw no necessity for a meeting, suggesting that any required correspondence could be directed to the President’s office instead. He also mentioned the possibility of providing funding for the inquiry, while underscoring the lack of urgency for direct dialogue with him.

Concerns have been raised by Janet Mason, the COI counsel, about potential irregularities in Malimali’s appointment, including claims that she tried to manipulate evidence presented to the COI. Despite these challenges, Rabuka has reiterated his commitment to the independence of the inquiry and has expressed a desire not to sway its results.

Currently, the COI is seeking a five-week extension to complete its report, which is anticipated by April 11. This inquiry represents a critical moment for fostering improved governance and accountability within Fiji. The hope is that the investigation will initiate necessary reforms that could lead to a more transparent political environment and renewed public confidence in government institutions. As the inquiry unfolds, it symbolizes the nation’s commitment to advancing integrity within Fiji’s public sector, paving the way for a brighter and more trustworthy future.
