The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has formally requested Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to take a leave of absence. This decision aims to ensure that the ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) can proceed without any disruptions. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the JSC, has indicated that this step is necessary for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the inquiry.
In a positive development, Malimali has voluntarily accepted the request for leave, emphasizing her commitment to the inquiries and the importance of a transparent process. The JSC secretary and Chief Registrar, Tomasi Bainivalu, has underscored the decision as part of a broader commitment to transparency, good governance, and the integrity of the judicial process. He highlighted that this move will help the COI fulfill its objectives and present findings to the President of Fiji without interference.
To ensure continuity in FICAC’s operations during Malimali’s absence, the JSC has appointed Lisiate Fotofili as the Acting Deputy Commissioner effective from February 19, 2025. Bainivalu reiterated the JSC’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining high standards of accountability and fairness throughout this process.
The inquiries into Malimali’s appointment and her previous tenure as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission are aimed at addressing allegations of abuse of office, thus reinforcing the importance of accountability within Fiji’s governance. This inquiry presents an opportunity for FICAC to enhance its credibility and restore public trust in its operations.
As the COI progresses, further updates will be provided regarding its findings, reflecting a hopeful outlook towards strengthening integrity in Fiji’s public institutions and governance frameworks.
