Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has voluntarily taken leave following a request from the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC). This decision aims to ensure the smooth progress of an ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) examining potential misconduct in her previous role. The Chief Registrar and Secretary of the JSC, Tomasi Bainivalu, mentioned that this step is essential for maintaining transparency and good governance in Fiji’s judicial processes.
To facilitate FICAC’s operations during Malimali’s absence, Lisiate Fotofili has been appointed as the Acting Deputy Commissioner, effective February 19, 2025. Bainivalu emphasized the JSC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the COI can present its findings without interference.
This leave comes amidst scrutiny of Malimali’s actions while serving as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, with the inquiry seeking to investigate allegations of abuse of office during that tenure. The ongoing inquiry is seen as a crucial moment for FICAC to reinforce its dedication to integrity and transparency, fostering public trust in governmental processes.
As investigations proceed, the commitment to uphold accountability and ethical standards could lead to meaningful reforms in Fiji, contributing to a governance framework that emphasizes the importance of transparency and public confidence.
The anticipation surrounding the COI’s findings also reflects a wider societal hope for a government that prioritizes ethical conduct, potentially enhancing trust in state institutions. The forthcoming findings may pave the way for addressing governance issues in Fiji effectively, ultimately fostering an environment that supports accountability and integrity.
