The Consumer Council of Fiji has raised significant concerns surrounding the insurance industry, with a reported 216 complaints lodged between 2019 and 2024, amounting to approximately $1.7 million in disputed claims. According to Chief Executive Seema Shandil, these figures may only represent a small fraction of the actual grievances, as many consumers either choose not to report their issues or seek assistance from different authorities.

Shandil pointed out that a notable number of complaints revolve around delays and disputes with payout processes, particularly concerning vehicle insurance claims. She emphasized that the persistence of such complaints over the years suggests systemic issues relating to claim settlements and repair service coordination within the industry.

To address these significant challenges, the Consumer Council is actively conducting awareness campaigns aimed at informing consumers of their rights and responsibilities, stressing the importance of thoroughly reviewing insurance documents before signing, as these are legal agreements.

Additionally, Shandil advocates for enhanced regulations and transparency within the insurance sector. She urged regulators to take decisive action to safeguard consumers and ensure that their rights are respected.
