The Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has requested an extension to complete its report, now due by April 23, 2025. Janet Mason, Counsel Assisting the Commission, explained that the extension is necessary due to delays attributed to the upcoming Easter holiday on April 18, which will provide them additional time to finalize the report before it is presented to both the President and Prime Minister of Fiji.

The inquiry, led by Supreme Court Justice David Aston-Lewis, is focused on whether Malimali’s appointment followed legal protocols and is also investigating allegations of improper influences, particularly in connection with ongoing FICAC cases involving notable public officials, including Members of Parliament and senior civil servants.

This inquiry signifies a crucial step toward enhancing transparency and accountability in Fiji’s governance framework. The importance of thorough investigations is underscored by Mason, who indicated that they do not plan to hold a media conference before the report’s presentation so that the government can adequately process the findings.

The extension request follows an extensive hearing process where the commission is committed to ensuring that all necessary testimonies are heard. Mason previously reported that only a small fraction of the total 35 witnesses had been heard, reflecting the complexity and depth of the inquiry.

Overall, this inquiry reflects a broader commitment to institutional integrity in Fiji’s governance and represents a hopeful opportunity for reforms aimed at bolstering public confidence in governmental processes. With a focus on accountability, these efforts are essential in cultivating trust and enhancing ethical standards within the public service sector.
