The Commission of Inquiry (COI) that has been established to investigate the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner is contemplating extending its hearings until late next month. Initially scheduled for a two-week period, the inquiry started this past Monday and aims to gather testimonies from a total of 35 witnesses.

Justice David Ashton-Lewis, who serves as the sole commissioner overseeing the COI, has suggested the possibility of requesting an extension from President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, indicating that the commission may require an additional four weeks to adequately examine all witnesses. “Given the complexity and significance of this matter, we are currently behind in our examination of witnesses,” he stated, underscoring the need for thorough and detailed questioning.

On the first day of hearings, only two out of the planned five witnesses—the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa—provided their testimonies. A total of 28 witnesses remain to be heard.
