A new career center has been proposed to address the labor shortage facing the country, spearheaded by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the producer of FIJI Water. The initiative, presented by Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for South Pacific, aims to replicate a successful model from California.

During the Top Executives Conference 2024 held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Moody emphasized that this career center represents a significant investment in Fiji’s future workforce. “I oversee special projects that broadly support our business in Fiji,” she noted. The proposed Career Centre will focus on skill development to uplift Fiji’s workforce and prepare individuals for job readiness.

Moody highlighted a critical shortfall in skilled seafarers capable of operating their vessels, which serve 11 locations across the Pacific. With a substantial investment exceeding FJ$140 million to increase production capacity by approximately 47%, FIJI Water is expecting to grow its workforce significantly over the next decade to meet the expanding operational needs.

Looking towards 2025, the plan is to collaborate with Fiji National University to establish the career center in Suva. Moody expressed optimism about the project, stating, “We already have a robust education team based in California dedicated to supporting workforce development.” The center will aim to fill the gap in training and ensure that the curriculum aligns with business needs.

Furthermore, Moody plans to engage other members of the manufacturing and marine industries to contribute to the career center through an industry council, thereby fostering a collaborative approach to workforce development.

This initiative not only seeks to alleviate the skills shortage but also to create a sustainable pipeline of trained individuals ready to meet the demands of both current and future employers. The focus on practical training and job readiness is a promising approach that could significantly enhance career opportunities for many in Fiji.

In summary, the establishment of this career center is a hopeful and proactive step towards tackling workforce challenges in Fiji, ensuring that the country is equipped with skilled professionals ready to take on roles in various industries, particularly in maritime operations.
