Fiji’s Inmate Funeral Releases Suspended: What’s Behind the Decision?

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced that it will temporarily suspend the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of close relatives. This decision is part of an ongoing review of operational policies and procedures to enhance safety, security, and consistency within the FCS.

For several years, the FCS has permitted the temporary release of inmates for family funerals on a case-by-case basis as an act of compassion. However, the lack of a formal policy for such releases has underscored the necessity for a thorough review.

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, Commissioner of Corrections, emphasized the importance of family and the emotional toll of bereavement on inmates but insisted on the need for clear and consistent guidelines to ensure public safety and operational integrity.

The review will concentrate on several key areas, including:

– Developing specific eligibility criteria for compassionate temporary releases.
– Ensuring the safety and security of both the public and inmates.
– Reducing operational disruptions caused by these releases.
– Engaging with important stakeholders to align the policy with best practices.

Dr. Nakarawa confirmed that no inmates will be allowed to attend funerals during the review period.
