Upgrades to water infrastructure in Fiji are anticipated to significantly improve the lives of over 80,000 residents. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, shared this insight during his address at the 2025 FMF Nadi Bula Festival held on Saturday.

Mr. Gavoka highlighted that these enhancements will directly benefit communities along Dreketi Feeder Rd, Vuda, Wairabetia, Nadi Airport, Sabeto Rd, and Korovuto. In his speech, he emphasized the government’s commitment to essential projects, including constructing new bridges to alleviate traffic congestion between Nadi and Lautoka, alongside accelerating the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project.

The Deputy Prime Minister announced an $8 million allocation in the upcoming financial year aimed at transforming Nadi into a resilient and forward-thinking model town. “Nadi Town plays a crucial role in Fiji’s tourism sector,” he stated, welcoming local and international visitors to enjoy its vibrant culture and hospitality.

Gavoka indicated that the government is keen on strengthening ties with the Nadi Town Council and the Nadi Chamber of Commerce to support sustainable growth. He framed tourism as not just an economic driver but also as a means of promoting social cohesion and uplifting lives, in line with the Fiji National Sustainable Tourism Framework, which prioritizes people, culture, and communities.

Festivals like the Bula Festival, according to Gavoka, serve as a platform that unites locals and visitors, fostering understanding and shared experiences. He underscored how tourism, through cultural celebrations, can enhance identity and pride among Fijians.

The government’s focus on infrastructure upgrades and community-centered tourism initiatives signifies a hopeful trajectory for the residents of Nadi and the broader Fijian community, paving the way for sustainable economic growth and greater social unity.

With continued investment and development, Fiji’s tourism sector looks set to thrive, creating numerous opportunities for its people while enhancing the island nation’s charm as a beloved destination.
