Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau has lamented the dismantling of the Public Works Department (PWD), labeling it one of the most tragic events in Fiji’s history. This transition has resulted in the loss of hundreds of technical staff and millions of dollars worth of state-owned equipment, significantly impacting the nation’s infrastructure capability.

While addressing parliament about the criteria determining whether the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) or PWD should handle specific infrastructure projects, Ro Filipe expressed the challenges posed by the phasing out of the PWD to establish the FRA. He noted that a substantial amount of PWD assets, valued at approximately $8.6 million, were transferred when the department was eliminated, leaving behind a long list of essential equipment, including 118 significant items like cranes and loaders.

The minister emphasized the daunting task ahead in rebuilding the capacity of the PWD, which lost many skilled professionals during its dissolution. He stated, “We cannot just build that up in 12 months or 24 months,” recognizing the complexity of replenishing the department’s operational capabilities.

In response to inquiries from the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, about the timeline for the PWD to become fully operational again and whether the FRA would be disbanded, Ro Filipe was unable to commit to a specific date. However, he suggested that a fully resourced PWD could potentially be operational within the next two to three years.

This conversation surrounding the PWD’s restoration interlinks with the government’s previous initiatives to improve infrastructure management and road maintenance across Fiji, especially focusing on rural and maritime areas that have been long neglected. The commitment to enhancing accessibility through infrastructure development holds promise for overall economic growth and community welfare.

In a hopeful turn, the government has signaled intentions to prioritize the rebuilding of critical infrastructure, ensuring better maintenance of Fiji’s roads and ultimately fostering stronger connectivity for all residents.
