Fiji’s Infrastructure Crisis: Are Lives Being Risked for Political Gimmicks?

The Shadow Minister for Justice, Ketan Lal, has called on the Coalition Government to prioritize the urgent infrastructure crisis afflicting Fiji instead of focusing on political distractions. He highlighted the recent collapse of the Vuniyasi Bridge in Nadi as a critical example of government negligence, which nearly cost four lives and left communities isolated from essential services.

Lal criticized the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Public Works Department (PWD) for their disorganization over the past two years, asserting that despite substantial budgets, the country’s infrastructure continues to deteriorate. He pointed out that basic utilities and transportation networks are in critical condition, while the government appears more concerned with political gimmicks than addressing these pressing issues.

The opposition MP questioned how many more lives would need to be endangered before the government takes responsibility, labeling the Minister responsible for infrastructure as incompetent and an insult to the Fijian people. He urged for immediate changes in leadership, advocating for a reshuffle of the Cabinet to bring in capable individuals who can effectively tackle the nation’s infrastructure challenges.

Lal emphasized that Fijians deserve a government that prioritizes their needs over political theatrics, insisting that the time for excuses has passed. For progress, accountability, and the safety of citizens, competent leadership is necessary to confront the real issues facing the nation.

This statement not only highlights the urgency of infrastructure issues but also calls for a more responsible and accountable approach from the government, paving the way for a hopeful future where public safety and community needs are prioritized.
