The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) officially commenced Infantry Week 2025 with a moving wreath-laying ceremony held at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Suva. This solemn event marked Infantry Day and honored all infantry soldiers who have served the nation, creating an atmosphere of remembrance and respect.
The ceremony was led by the Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) and celebrated the legacy of Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu, the only Fijian recipient of the Victoria Cross, who sacrificed his life during combat operations in Bougainville on June 23, 1944. His bravery serves as an enduring symbol of valor and selflessness that continues to inspire Fijian soldiers and future generations.
Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the RFMF, along with senior military officers, members of the Ex-Servicemen’s Association, and representatives from the diplomatic corps attended the ceremony, reinforcing the importance of unity and respect in honoring those who served.
In line with the week-long observance, RFMF personnel, alongside their defense partners, engaged in a community outreach program at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, highlighting their commitment not only to military duties but also to their responsibilities towards the community.
This week will feature numerous activities, including an inter-unit mini-skills competition, reflecting a spirit of camaraderie and competition that embodies the values of the RFMF.
“Infantry Day is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the past and the ongoing commitment of our armed forces to our nation,” stated Major General Kalouniwai, encapsulating the sentiment of the week and the dedication exhibited by the military.
The honoring of past sacrifices while fostering connections with the community symbolizes a hopeful trajectory for the RFMF, as they not only remember their history but also actively participate in shaping a strong, unified future for Fiji.
