Suspended Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, is set to be investigated by the Fiji Police Force following allegations outlined in the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed the suspension and announced that Lavi Rokoika would serve as the Acting Commissioner during the investigation.

Rabuka also appointed Lisiate Fotofili as the Deputy Commissioner, although Fotofili will return to his previous position within the Fiji Judiciary. The Prime Minister stressed his commitment to transparency and indicated that the report of the COI, which is funded by public resources, will eventually be made public. However, he has resolved to release it in a way that safeguards ongoing investigations and respects the civil rights of those accused.

This recent development follows Malimali’s appointment and comes amid serious allegations of abuse of office related to her past tenure as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission. The situation echoes previous concerns regarding governance and accountability within Fiji’s political structures.

Moreover, the Prime Minister’s proactive stance signals a potential turning point for reforms within FICAC and other governmental bodies. By navigating these investigations carefully and upholding the rule of law, there is hope that enhanced standards of integrity and transparency will emerge from this challenging time, ultimately fostering greater public trust in Fiji’s governance.

These ongoing investigations reflect crucial efforts towards ensuring accountability, which may lead to systemic reforms that uphold ethical standards in public service. In the long run, this could positively impact the administration of justice and governance in Fiji, promoting a more accountable and trustworthy public sector.
