The Ministry of Agriculture in Fiji is ramping up its support for farmers, with a focus on youth, women, and communities in remote islands. Minister Tomasi Tunabuna has reiterated his dedication to aiding subsistence, industrial, and commercial farmers in alignment with the national agricultural policy.

A central theme of the Ministry’s initiative is promoting gender equality in agricultural production and processing. This commitment extends to facilitating the transition of young farmers into commercial farming. In a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Education, agriculture is being integrated into educational programs, with the goal of inspiring future generations to pursue farming as a viable career.

Significant strides are being made in enhancing agriculture within maritime zones and outer islands. Initiatives include the establishment of nurseries in locations such as Kadavu, Moala, and Taveuni, along with coconut nurseries on smaller islands. Tunabuna noted that the Ministry is also working closely with local communities to commercialize farming, ensuring better access to markets, and exploring tourism opportunities through agri-tourism.

Agriculture Economist Sainiana Kirisitiana highlights that the agricultural policy’s primary objectives are to enhance productivity, improve food security, and build climate resilience within Fiji’s farming sector. The aim is to promote value addition and agro-processing, effectively creating sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities, especially for women, youth, and rural communities.

Through these concerted efforts, the Ministry of Agriculture is committed to strengthening Fiji’s agricultural sector, fostering inclusive growth, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for farmers throughout the nation. With these initiatives, there is hope for a brighter future for Fiji’s farming industry, creating thriving communities and a more resilient economy.
