The Ministry of Immigration in Fiji has confirmed the deportation of over 80 undocumented foreign nationals from last year through April this year, as part of a concerted nationwide compliance initiative. Minister Viliame Naupoto has expressed concerns that many undocumented individuals are still residing in the country, potentially engaging in illegal employment.

To date, the Ministry has utilized over $50,000 of its allocated $100,000 budget for deportations, which indicates the substantial cost associated with these operations. Notably, many deported individuals opt for “voluntary removal,” covering their own travel expenses back to their home countries.

Minister Naupoto has issued a stern warning to employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers, noting that such practices could lead to prosecution. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has further highlighted the vulnerability of undocumented workers, who often face exploitation and underpayment. He cautioned that workers without proper permits are sometimes forced to work under the table, exposing themselves to various forms of abuse.

In a recent development, the Immigration Ministry is mandating that undocumented individuals regularize their immigration status by an upcoming Saturday, or they will face potential detention, deportation, and bans on re-entry into Fiji.

This emphasizes the government’s commitment to maintaining legal immigration standards while addressing the challenges of rising illegal immigration, which has seen numbers swell from approximately 4,700 to over 8,000 within a year. The situation underscores the importance of adherence to labor laws and the potential need for reform in Fiji’s immigration and employment frameworks.

These proactive measures can foster a more organized and compliant immigration environment, which could ultimately benefit both the Fijian economy and the foreign workers who contribute to it. As Fiji navigates these complexities, efforts like enhancing labor compliance and addressing workers’ rights are crucial steps toward a balanced immigration policy that supports both economic growth and humanitarian needs.
