Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, has been temporarily relieved of his responsibilities due to serious concerns regarding the Department of Immigration. An Acting Minister has been appointed, although Rabuka has not disclosed their identity at this time.
Rabuka characterized the situation within the Department as a “sad chapter,” highlighting its implications for leadership and management. He emphasized the importance of addressing urgent matters with the Acting Minister as the investigation unfolds.
In addition to Tikoduadua’s temporary removal, Rabuka confirmed that the Director of Immigration and several senior officials have also been suspended. Tikoduadua’s decision to step aside follows revelations about potentially unauthorized passport issuances for children connected to individuals involved in the Grace Road human rights allegations. He stated that these passports were issued without his knowledge, the authority of the Permanent Secretary, or appropriate authorization from senior management within the department.
This situation underscores the significance of accountability within government departments and the commitment to ensuring proper administrative procedures are followed. The Prime Minister’s swift action suggests a desire to restore public trust and address the issues within the immigration system.
As investigations proceed, there is hope that this will lead to meaningful reforms and enhanced oversight in immigration practices, ultimately resulting in a more transparent and accountable system.
