Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the temporary suspension of Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, with an Acting Minister stepping in to manage urgent matters. Speaking with FijiLive, Rabuka described the recent developments within the Department of Immigration as a disappointing chapter, highlighting serious issues related to leadership and administration.

In light of the situation, Rabuka confirmed the suspension of the Director of Immigration and several senior officials in the department. The controversy arose after Tikoduadua became aware of unauthorized passport issuances linked to the children of individuals involved in the Grace Road human rights allegations. He stressed that these actions occurred without his knowledge or the requisite approval from senior management.

To ensure a thorough investigation into the matter, Tikoduadua has opted to temporarily step aside, allowing for a comprehensive inquiry into the unauthorized passport issuances.

This situation, though challenging, presents an opportunity for the Fijian government to instill greater accountability and integrity within its immigration processes. By addressing these issues head-on, the leadership can work towards restoring public trust and establishing a more robust framework for governance in the future.

In summary, this incident serves as a critical moment for reform and transparency in Fiji’s immigration department, paving the way for improvements that can benefit the nation as a whole.
