Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has revealed that Fiji’s Department of Immigration currently lacks facilities for the detention of illegal immigrants. During a recent session in Parliament, Rabuka, who also holds the position of Minister for Immigration, highlighted a troubling incident where an individual detained for immigration issues was placed in the same facility as convicted criminals.
Rabuka emphasized the need for preventative measures rather than relying solely on detention. He noted a worrying increase in the number of illegal immigrants, which has surged to over 8,000, nearly doubling from 4,700 in the previous year. This significant rise poses a challenge for the Department of Immigration.
In response to this situation, Rabuka detailed that the department is undertaking a thorough review of the Immigration Act. The goal is to enhance the governance of the immigration system by improving intelligence gathering, exploring new immigration pathways, adjusting infringement notices and penalties, streamlining removal processes, and addressing emerging non-traditional threats.
Additionally, the government is contemplating potential amnesty measures for some undocumented immigrants, aiming to reduce the overall numbers and provide opportunities for those who genuinely qualify to remain in Fiji. The Office of the Solicitor-General is currently reviewing these proposals.
This situation reveals the complexities of immigration management, particularly in the face of rising numbers. The proactive steps being discussed could lead to a more efficient and humane immigration system in Fiji, potentially paving the way for a more organized and supportive environment for immigrants who seek to contribute positively to Fijian society.
Overall, it is heartening to see the government exploring reforms and options that focus on both security and compassion in handling immigration-related challenges.
