Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has highlighted a pressing issue regarding illegal immigration in Fiji, noting that the Department of Immigration currently lacks facilities to detain illegal immigrants and has no immediate plans to establish proper detention centers. Speaking during a session in Parliament, Rabuka, who also oversees immigration, revealed an alarming incident where individuals detained for immigration violations were housed alongside convicted criminals.

He expressed concern over this situation and emphasized the department’s intention to find better methods to ensure immigrants do not overstay their visas. The Prime Minister reported that the number of illegal immigrants in Fiji has surged to over 8,000, a significant increase from 4,700 just this past year.

In response to these challenges, Rabuka’s government is undertaking a thorough review of the Immigration Act, aimed at enhancing the department’s autonomy and addressing crucial areas like intelligence gathering and removal processes. The Prime Minister also mentioned exploring potential amnesty options for those who may qualify to remain in Fiji, a measure currently undergoing review by the Office of the Solicitor-General.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to reforming the immigration system, potentially leading to a more efficient management of immigration challenges while also considering humanitarian aspects for those in genuine need.

In a positive light, this reflects the government’s proactive stance in addressing illegal immigration issues, aiming for a solution that balances security concerns with compassion for individuals seeking to stay in the country for legitimate reasons.
