Fiji’s Ikanivere Prepares for Epic Clash Against Tonga

Fiji’s Water Flying Fijian captain Tevita Ikanivere is cautious ahead of the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup match against Tonga in Nuku’alofa tomorrow. Ikanivere, who has once again been appointed to lead the 23-man squad for the revamped competition, acknowledges the challenges of facing Tonga on their home ground with a passionate crowd backing them.

“Playing Tonga at home is what we expect, and we see this match as a build-up,” Ikanivere stated prior to their departure on Tuesday. He emphasized the team’s efforts to address mistakes made during their previous match against Samoa last month.

In their opening Pacific Nations Cup encounter, Fiji defeated Samoa 42-16 at the HFC Bank Stadium, while Samoa secured a similar victory against Tonga, winning 42-17 last weekend in Apia, Samoa.

Ikanivere anticipates a match characterized by intensity similar to that against Samoa, stressing the importance of consistency and physicality while avoiding penalties. Historically, Fiji and Tonga have been fierce competitors on the rugby field, having first met in Test rugby in 1924. This weekend’s match will mark the 95th clash between the two nations in a century.

The Flying Fijians will see Adrea Cocagi return as inside center, with new Fijian Drua recruit Vuate Karawalevu joining Epeli Momo on the wings, and Isaiah Ravula starting at fullback. Albert Tuisue will step in at Number 8, moving Kitione Salawa to the bench, and he will partner with Ratu Meli Derenalagi and Elia Canakaivata in the back row. The front row features Eroni Mawi, Ikanivere, and Samuela Tawake, while Mesake Vocevoce and Temo Mayanavanua will form the second row.

Frank Lomani retains his role as scrum-half alongside fly-half Caleb Muntz, with Iosefo Masi positioned as outside center. The match is set to kick off at 3 PM.
