Athletics Fiji has unveiled its inaugural Ignite Camp 2025, a high-performance training program aimed at propelling the nation’s most promising athletes toward international competition. Scheduled to take place from Wednesday to Friday at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, the camp is expected to gather top young athletes aged between 14 to over 20, segmented into Young, Development, and Elite groups.
Over three days, participants will engage in various activities that include technical training, performance testing, and athlete education, all tailored to prepare them for significant events like the Pacific Mini Games in Palau 2025 and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The goal is to bring together more than 70 of Fiji’s elite athletes along with their coaches as part of a comprehensive high-performance strategy devised by Athletics Fiji.
The camp officially opens at 7 am next Wednesday, and participants from outside Suva are advised that accommodation and travel costs will not be covered by the organizers.
This initiative follows other recent camps, such as the off-season athletics training program run by the Fiji Sports Council (FSC), which aimed to improve training opportunities for young athletes from less prominent schools. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou emphasized the necessity for structured training, highlighting how past competitions revealed a lack of preparation, often resulting in injuries.
Both initiatives underscore a broader commitment to fostering athletic talent across Fiji. By investing in the training and development of young athletes, organizations like Athletics Fiji and the FSC are paving the way for a more competent sports culture, promoting inclusivity, discipline, and a passion for athletics.
The Ignite Camp serves not only as a preparatory ground for future competitions but also as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes looking to leave their mark on both national and international stages. As these young talents dedicate themselves to honing their skills, the future of athletics in Fiji appears bright.
