Fiji’s Identity in Focus: Can the Term ‘Fijian’ Unite a Nation?

The National Security and Defence Review Taskforce in Fiji is urging the Prime Minister to obtain formal approval from the Great Council of Chiefs regarding the use of the term “Fijian” as a designation for all citizens of Fiji. During the launch of the report yesterday, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua expressed that this initiative is a positive beginning and aims to advance from this point.

The report indicates that some stakeholders believe that adopting “Fijian” as a national identity can unify the population and foster social cohesion. It emphasizes that bringing this matter before the Great Council of Chiefs, who protect the indigenous Fijian identity, serves as a step toward reconciliation.

The proposal allows the Great Council of Chiefs to deliberate on the matter, potentially leaving a significant legacy, akin to that of their ancestors who signed the Deed of Cession on October 10, 1874, and to illustrate their commitment to the nation’s welfare. The report underscores that this act of reconciliation could significantly enhance social cohesion within the country.
