The Fiji Hydrography Service (FHS), under the Republic of Fiji Navy, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe navigation of vessels through the production of accurate and up-to-date nautical charts. This service is essential for supporting trade and maritime transportation, contributing significantly to national infrastructure planning, coastal development, and enhancing tourism through reliable access to ports and remote island destinations.
Director Commander Jervis Robinson highlighted that the FHS is responsible for the collection, processing, and management of hydrographic data, which supports key areas such as maritime transport and disaster risk reduction. The data collected assists in defining maritime boundaries, guides sustainable fishing zones, and aids in marine spatial planning, thus promoting responsible management of fisheries and tourism.
With respect to national security, hydrographic surveys provide critical information for naval operations, enhancing surveillance and border protection efforts. Furthermore, the service contributes to disaster risk reduction by identifying coastal hazards and informing climate resilience initiatives.
Vessel operators, both local and international, can access hydrographic information through official nautical charts and publications provided by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), with FHS also producing nautical charts specifically for local shipping needs.
The service’s efforts are further bolstered by international collaborations with organizations like the UKHO and participation in global hydrographic forums, including the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). These partnerships and the revitalization of the Fiji National Hydrographic Committee illustrate a commitment to aligning national hydrographic activities with the government’s priorities, particularly the Blue Economy and the Fiji National Development Plan.
Recent advancements in hydrographic services stem from the challenges and successes celebrated during World Hydrography Day, reinforcing the commitment to improve maritime safety and promote sustainability in ocean governance. This emphasizes a hopeful journey towards not only efficient maritime operations but also the sustainable use of Fiji’s vast ocean territory.
As Fiji continues to foster innovation and international cooperation in hydrographic efforts, the outlook remains optimistic for enhancing navigational safety, promoting sustainable development, and safeguarding the rich marine resources essential for the country’s economy and community wellbeing.
