The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has highlighted numerous urgent challenges that need to be addressed in Fiji. According to Chairman Pravesh Sharma, pressing issues include police violence, gender-based violence, child abuse, poverty, workforce discrimination, exploitation of migrant workers, and the severe effects of climate change.

Mr. Sharma emphasized that vulnerable groups—such as women, children, people with disabilities, individuals identifying as LGBTI, and marginalized communities—are disproportionately affected by these issues. He stressed the importance of timely action, stating that delaying solutions exacerbates inequalities and undermines the dignity and well-being of Fiji’s citizens.

He noted that poverty transcends a mere lack of resources; it represents a disregard for fundamental human rights. Additionally, he pointed out that climate change poses not just an environmental problem but a significant human rights crisis, jeopardizing the livelihoods, homes, and futures of many Fijians.

In this context, the call to action underscores the need for collaborative efforts to confront these challenges. By prioritizing human rights and addressing these pressing concerns, Fiji has the opportunity to foster a more equitable and just society.

In summary, the commission’s message serves as a critical reminder that addressing human rights issues must be a priority in Fiji, and there is potential for positive change through immediate action and commitment to uphold the rights of all citizens.
