The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has acknowledged significant “reputational damage” following the 2006 coup, highlighting concerns that its commissioners were perceived as favoring those in power. Chairperson Pravesh Sharma spoke to The Fiji Times online portal, The Lens@177, about the commission’s plan to advertise commissioner positions, aiming to ensure that appointments are based on merit rather than connections to the appointing authority.

Sharma noted that the previous practice of hand-picking commissioners has hindered the commission’s ability to meet the standards set by the Global Alliance National Human Rights Institution (GANHRI) in Geneva. He shared that the commission lost its A-accreditation status in 2006, a designation that indicates full compliance with human rights principles. After this setback, the FHRADC struggled for 15 years and only regained A-status in 2021.

Sharma elaborated, stating, “An A-accreditation means you’re fully human rights principle-compliant, B means you’re almost there, and no status means you have a long road ahead.” He explained that following the coup, GANHRI determined that the commission was not enforcing human rights principles effectively. Consequently, the FHRADC voluntarily withdrew its A-status, but GANHRI suspended the commission, resulting in a complete loss of accreditation.

As the commission moves forward, Sharma’s emphasis on merit-based appointments and organizational transparency bodes well for restoring FHRADC’s credibility. By actively seeking to eliminate favoritism and enhance compliance with global human rights standards, there is hope for rebuilding its reputation and trust within the community.

This effort could signify a new chapter for the FHRADC, signaling its commitment to uphold human rights and maintain legitimacy in the eyes of both the local populace and international bodies. Re-establishing credibility could serve as a catalyst for improved human rights advocacy and protection in Fiji.
