Fiji’s Human Rights Commission Demands Action Against Police Brutality

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has expressed strong disapproval of the violence reportedly perpetrated by the Fiji Police Force. The Commission highlighted that such brutality amounts to significant violations of human rights, which severely damages the public’s trust in law enforcement agencies.

In a recent statement, the FHRADC emphasized that the police are expected to uphold the law with integrity and professionalism, treating all individuals with honor and respect. Recently, the Commission received three complaints relating to alleged breaches of human rights linked to police actions. One notable complaint involves an incident in Nausori, where a bystander reportedly faced physical assault. Additionally, there was a case involving a man who claimed he was held in custody in the Northern division for two weeks and experienced physical abuse. Another allegation pertains to the use of force during a caution interview, purportedly to elicit a confession.

The FHRADC is calling for prompt and thorough investigations into these allegations of police brutality, stressing the need for accountability for those responsible. They argue that ensuring accountability is vital for rebuilding public trust in the justice system and preventing recurrence of such issues.

Moreover, the Commission urges the Fiji Police Force to prioritize comprehensive human rights training for their officers. This training should focus on important skills like restraint, de-escalation, and maintaining respect for human dignity in all interactions with community members.
