The Ministry of Housing has announced the issuance of 454 99-year leases by the end of this year for residents of informal settlements across Fiji. Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa confirmed that these leases will benefit 114 households in Cuvu, over 70 households in Ledrusasa, and approximately 270 households in the Waidamudamu area.
Nalumisa emphasized the government’s commitment to not only planning but also delivering tangible results. He highlighted that four significant upgrading projects for informal settlements are currently underway in Tavela (Nadi), Sakoca (Nasinu), Tore, and Field 4 (Lautoka). These projects are seen as a positive step towards improving living conditions and formalizing housing for those in vulnerable situations.
In addition to the leases, the Ministry is managing several other development initiatives as part of the Informal Settlement Upgrading Program, which aims to enhance the quality of life in various communities, helping to meet the ongoing housing demand across the country.
The government’s focus on upgrading these settlements reflects a broader initiative to tackle housing challenges and improve accessibility to quality housing. As these projects continue to make progress, there is growing optimism among the communities that affordable housing solutions will soon be realized.
This positive direction in housing policy indicates a bright future for many families, paving the way for stability and improved living conditions in Fiji’s informal settlements.
