In Fiji, approximately 25% of the population resides in informal settlements within various towns and cities. This statistic was revealed by Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Community Development, based on data collected from over 250 informal settlements across the nation.
Recognizing the urgent need for improvement in these areas, the Ministry is working alongside various partners to implement necessary upgrades. Part of this initiative involves conducting surveys to gain a better understanding of the living conditions faced by individuals in these settlements. The goal is to identify residents who may have the means to purchase land and housing, allowing them to transition out of informal settlements.
To support these efforts, the government has approved funding of $1 million for the fiscal year 2023-2024, with an additional $1 million allocated in the proposed budget for 2024-2025. Moreover, the ministry is revising the 2011 National Housing Policy to better address the complexities arising from rapid urban growth and to improve land development planning.
However, residents are cautioned against purchasing properties in informal settlements due to potential risks. The ministry has encountered incidents where individuals, having bought properties informally without documentation, later faced claims from original landowners, leading to eviction and financial loss. The ministry strongly advises potential buyers to be wary and to consider properties in legally recognized neighborhoods to avoid such challenges.
This initiative by the Fijian government is a significant step toward addressing housing issues and improving living conditions for many residents. By focusing on revitalizing informal settlements and ensuring access to safe and affordable housing, there is a hopeful prospect for enhanced quality of life and stability for those affected. The collaborative efforts of the Ministry and various stakeholders can foster sustainable community development and secure a brighter future for Fiji’s underprivileged populations.
