The Ministry for Housing in Fiji has identified inadequate planning as a significant factor exacerbating the ongoing housing crisis in the country. Minister Maciu Nalumisa highlighted that the absence of effective urban planning has resulted in overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and an alarming lack of affordable housing options.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized the urgent need for enhanced urban development strategies, stating, “It is very important that we have better master planning. Once we do that, we plan for future development.” With more than half of the population now residing in urban areas, he underscored the necessity for proactive planning to accommodate residential, commercial, and industrial needs. The push for better planning is directed at improving living conditions and addressing the fundamental issue of housing shortages.

In line with previous discussions about the pressing housing challenges highlighted at the Housing Sector Forum, Nalumisa’s acknowledgment of poor planning resonates with the need for innovative housing models and public-private collaborations, as echoed by KPMG Fiji Head of Advisory, Anare Manulevu. He noted that integrating sustainable overseas housing models will be critical in formulating effective solutions.

Funding initiatives are also underway, as seen in the recent National Budget allocations that prioritize housing projects aiming to formalize informal settlements and enhance affordability for low-income families. The National Housing Policy for 2025-2030, aimed at addressing housing affordability, is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to sustainable housing solutions.

These combined efforts reflect a hopeful trajectory for Fiji, as the government and various stakeholders aim to address the intertwined issues of urbanization and housing access. Through strategic planning and community engagement, there is optimism for a future where all Fijians can secure adequate and affordable housing.

The focus on collaboration and innovative strategies embodies a proactive approach to resolving one of Fiji’s most pressing challenges, underscoring the potential for positive change in the housing landscape.
