The Housing Authority of Fiji has embarked on a groundbreaking project by constructing homes for the first time in over three decades. Last week, the organization conducted an official barrel draw to allocate its inaugural delivery of 101 model homes as part of the Nepani Model Homes initiative.

This significant development signifies a renewed focus by the Housing Authority on producing not just land, but also affordable and decent housing for Fijian families. Chief Executive Officer Isikeli Navuda highlighted the organization’s commitment by stating, “After more than three decades, the Housing Authority has resumed building homes again. The 101 model homes at Nepani are just the beginning.”

The Nepani project reflects a strong public response to the previous year’s Expression of Interest call, showcasing the pressing demand for housing solutions across the nation. Navuda mentioned that while the first wave consists of 101 homes, plans are underway to create an additional 400 homes by the end of the year.

These new dwellings will come in both 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom formats, aiming to fulfill the genuine needs of families by providing not only shelter but also a sense of stability, dignity, and a foundation for a better future. To further make these homes accessible, the Housing Authority is complementing a government subsidy through the Housing Assistance Grant with an additional $2.9 million aimed at subsidizing the costs of land and housing for the low-income demographic.

The barrel draw, which took place at the Housing Authority’s headquarters in Valelevu, was attended by staff from the Ministry of Housing, the Fiji Police Force, and selected Housing Authority personnel, ensuring transparency in the allocation process. The Nepani Model Homes project marks a pivotal moment in Fiji’s housing landscape, promising a brighter future for families in need of secure and affordable homes.
