Hoteliers in Fiji’s Western Division are taking significant precautions to safeguard guests from the ongoing dengue fever outbreak. Travel advisories from both the United States and New Zealand governments highlight the seriousness of the situation, prompting hotels to implement rigorous health measures.

Tanoa Hotel Group’s general manager, Narend Kumar, mentioned that the hotel chain has actively engaged in spraying campaigns to protect their guests. The hotel has also collaborated with the Lautoka City Council, supplying chemicals to aid in their mosquito control efforts amidst the outbreak, which has intensified in the region. “In addition to our own spraying efforts within our properties, we are also concerned about the surrounding areas frequented by our guests and are committing resources to assist the council,” stated Kumar.

Hotels in Nadi are also on high alert and have initiated individual response plans to combat the dengue threat. For instance, Hotel BulaBard in Wailoaloa has communicated to its guests that it is regularly maintaining its premises to eradicate potential mosquito breeding sites.

The dengue fever crisis has become more pressing, with the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently listing Fiji in its Global Dengue Travel Health Advisory, acknowledging a rise in dengue infections, particularly in the Western Division, which has reported over 1,400 cases as of early March.

In response to this alarming health situation, Fiji’s Ministry of Health has been mobilizing public health teams for house-to-house surveillance and mosquito control measures, such as applying larvicides. The growing threat underscores the importance of community involvement, public health education, and individual compliance with health advisories to ensure collective safety.

This proactive approach from both the tourism sector and health authorities represents a community-driven effort that not only addresses the immediate threat of dengue but also emphasizes the necessity of ongoing vigilance and constructive public health practices. Through cooperation and ongoing education, there is hope for effectively managing and mitigating the dengue outbreak in Fiji.
