The Fiji Police Force reported that from December 22 to December 25, a total of 934 traffic infringement notices were issued. Among those, 23 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Careless driving resulted in 58 notices, and both failing to present a driving license and not wearing seat belts accounted for 51 penalties each. Furthermore, 10 drivers were charged for carrying excess passengers, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for operating a vehicle with an expired driving license.
Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that speeding remains the predominant cause of road accidents. He urged all motorists to adhere to speed limits and highlighted ongoing efforts to promote traffic awareness and compliance with road rules. ACP Driu recommended that drivers plan their trips carefully, ensure they get adequate rest, and limit alcohol consumption if they intend to drive.
