Leevan Dutta, the captain of the Fiji men’s hockey team, celebrated a significant milestone by earning his 50th international cap as his team triumphed in the Intercontinental Cup held at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Fiji secured a 6-3 victory against the Solomon Islands in the gold medal playoff, while Vanuatu claimed bronze by defeating Samoa 4-3.

At 32 years old, Dutta began his hockey journey at the age of 15 and reflected on the game, expressing satisfaction despite acknowledging their slow start. “We were a bit complacent in the beginning, but in the second half, we found our rhythm and managed to secure the win,” he said. Dutta commended the Fiji Hockey Federation for organizing the Pacific Cup, highlighting the logistical challenges and costs associated with travel for players.

He also praised the contributions of debutants Kirk Corrie, Dale Johanssen, and George Ravatu, stating, “They showed why they belong in the team. We are very proud of their performance.” The establishment of the Warriors team has provided more opportunities for players to experience high-level competition, which Dutta believes is beneficial for the overall development of the sport in Fiji.

In a heartfelt tribute, he dedicated the team’s victory to their families, friends, and teammates, emphasizing the sacrifices made along the way. “All glory to God,” he added.

In a related note, the Fiji women’s hockey team also achieved remarkable success, maintaining their unbeaten record throughout the Oceania Pacific Cup tournament. They emerged victorious in both the Intercontinental and Pacific Cup, defeating Samoa 8-2 and winning in a shootout against New Zealand Pasifika after a tied score of 2-all in the final. Fiji’s women displayed outstanding performance, with Melba Nautu being the top female goal scorer with 13 goals, complementing Dutta’s impressive tally of 19 goals.

This success is a testament to Fiji’s growing strength in hockey, showcasing the talent and determination of both their men’s and women’s teams. It reflects well on Fiji’s sports development initiatives, promoting greater opportunities for young athletes and a bright future for hockey in the region.
