The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday. The President commended the team’s achievements and expressed gratitude for the dedication of the coaches, management, and the young athletes.
“This is a remarkable achievement, as this is the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, which is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame stated.
Fiji, traditionally known for its rugby prowess, is increasingly gaining recognition in football, with the President highlighting how the nation has consistently “punched above its weight” in international sports. He reaffirmed Fiji’s notable successes in events like sevens rugby, noting that the accomplishments of the women’s football team are ushering in an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.
However, he acknowledged the challenges the team faces, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team both mentally and physically.
“What you have done is extraordinary,” he commented, showing appreciation for their dedication. The President also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families while highlighting the essential role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.
“We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he added.
The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a significant milestone for Fiji, emphasizing the development of women’s football in the country. It aims to inspire the next generation of athletes and unite the nation in support of its football team on the global stage.
