The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team showcased their traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, in celebration of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship.

The President praised the team’s accomplishments and expressed gratitude for the dedication of the coaches, management, and young athletes. He stated, “This is truly a remarkable achievement, as this marks the first time that Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, and it is indeed a commendable effort.”

Historically recognized for its prowess in rugby, Fiji is now gaining global attention for its football achievements as well, with Ratu Wiliame noting that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” in the world of sports. He highlighted the country’s past successes in tournaments like sevens rugby, asserting that the women’s football team’s accomplishments mark a new and exciting chapter in Fiji’s sporting narrative.

However, he acknowledged the obstacles the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame commended the coaching and management teams for their unwavering commitment to preparing the athletes mentally and physically.

“What you have done is something else,” he expressed, conveying his admiration and appreciation for their hard work. The Head of State also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, along with the significant role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.

He concluded by assuring that the nation will continue to support and pray for the team and its management as they guide these young women who are set to represent Fiji.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil, making this tournament a pivotal moment for the development of women’s football in Fiji. It is expected to inspire future athletes and unite the nation in support of their football team on the international stage.

The tournament fixtures in Medellín, Colombia, are as follows (Fiji time):
