Fiji’s national rugby team, known as the Flying Fijians, is looking to build on their recent success as they prepare for their third Test against Spain this coming Sunday. Head coach Mick Byrne expressed optimism after the team’s landmark 24-19 victory over Wales, which marked their first win in Cardiff.
The match was intense, characterized by both teams receiving yellow cards, along with a red card for Fijian center Semi Radradra. This allowed Wales to initially take the lead as they sought to break a long losing streak. However, the Fijian squad demonstrated resilience, rebounding in the second half to secure a historic win.
Looking ahead to the upcoming game against Spain, Byrne emphasized the importance of resetting the team’s focus. “We need to reset ourselves and go again,” he noted, highlighting the positive momentum from their recent performance. He also acknowledged the valuable experience gained from competing against European teams on their home turf.
Byrne expressed his joy for the players, recognizing their hard work and dedication. He particularly praised Caleb Muntz, the player of the match, who had a standout performance with a try, four successful penalties, and a key conversion. Byrne remarked on Muntz’s growth as a young player, stating that his performance at the prestigious Principality Stadium has set a strong precedent in top-tier rugby.
The coach also looked forward to future opportunities, expressing hope for Fiji’s inclusion in the Nations Cup in 2026, which would serve as key preparation leading up to the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The Flying Fijians are set to face Spain at 2 a.m. on Sunday at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, followed by their final match against Ireland on November 24.
This optimistic outlook reflects the team’s determination and commitment to maintaining their successful trajectory while representing their nation with pride.
