The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship. The President commended the team for their significant achievement, recognizing that this is the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the championship taking place in Colombia.
Ratu Wiliame highlighted Fiji’s longstanding reputation in rugby while noting the country’s growing recognition in football, stating that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” in international sports. He emphasized that the success of the women’s football team marks an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.
While celebrating their achievements, the President also acknowledged the challenges the team faces, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. He praised the coaching and management staff for their dedication and hard work in preparing the athletes both mentally and physically.
In expressing his gratitude, Ratu Wiliame recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, as well as the vital role played by team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. He assured that the nation will continue to support and pray for the team as they embark on this important journey.
The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the country and inspiring future generations of athletes, while uniting the nation in support of its team on the global stage.
