The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, in recognition of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship. The President commended the team’s accomplishments and acknowledged the contributions of the coaches, management, and the athletes themselves.
“This is a remarkable achievement, as it marks the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, and it is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame stated.
Fiji, known for its success in rugby, is gaining international attention for its achievements in football, with Ratu Wiliame highlighting that the nation has consistently outperformed expectations on the global sports stage. He pointed out that the women’s football team is opening a thrilling new chapter in Fiji’s sporting legacy, building on the country’s notable accomplishments in tournaments like sevens rugby.
However, he also acknowledged the difficulties the team faces, including restricted funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering dedication to preparing the team both mentally and physically.
“What you have done is exceptional,” he expressed, showing gratitude and respect for their hard work. The President also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, and highlighted the essential role played by team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.
“We will continue to support and pray for the team and management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he added.
The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B, facing France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the progress and growth of women’s football in the country, while inspiring future generations of athletes and uniting the nation in support of its team on the world stage.
The tournament fixtures in Medellín, Colombia (Fiji time) are as follows:
– August 31: 6 PM Fiji vs. Brazil
– September 3: 8 PM Fiji vs. Canada
– September 6: 5 PM Fiji vs. France.
