The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, in preparation for the FIFA World U20 Championship.
The President praised the team’s achievements, expressing gratitude for the efforts of the coaches, management, and players. Ratu Wiliame highlighted that this is a significant milestone, as it is the first time a women’s team from Fiji will compete at such a high level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, which he described as an impressive accomplishment.
While Fiji has long been recognized for its prowess in rugby, Ratu Wiliame emphasized that the country is now gaining international recognition in football as well. He noted that Fiji has a track record of excelling in sports, asserting that the women’s football team is embarking on an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sports narrative.
However, he acknowledged the challenges the team faces, such as limited funding and infrastructure. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their dedicated efforts in training the team both mentally and physically, expressing his admiration for their work.
Additionally, the President recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, as well as the essential contributions of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. He assured continued support and encouragement for the team and their management as they prepare to represent Fiji.
The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament signifies a crucial milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the country and inspiring future generations of athletes.
The fixtures for the competition in Medellín, Colombia (Fiji time) are as follows:
– August 31: 6pm Fiji vs. Brazil
– September 3: 8pm Fiji vs. Canada
– September 6: 5pm Fiji vs. France
