Fiji’s Historic Moment: U20 Women’s Team Prepares for World Stage

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team officially presented their traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship.

The President praised the team for their accomplishments and expressed gratitude towards the coaches, management, and the young athletes themselves. He highlighted the significance of this event, marking the first time a women’s team from Fiji would compete at such a prestigious tournament in Colombia, describing it as a commendable achievement.

Ratu Wiliame acknowledged Fiji’s reputation in rugby and noted that the nation is now gaining recognition in football as well. He emphasized that Fiji has consistently performed well on the international stage, particularly in sports. The President pointed out that the women’s football team is paving the way for an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sports history, following the country’s notable successes in tournaments like sevens rugby.

Despite the successes, he also recognized the obstacles the team faces, including challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame commended the coaching and management staff for their relentless dedication in preparing the team both mentally and physically, expressing his admiration for their commitment.

He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the players and their families and recognized the essential role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as they guide and mentor these young women who are set to represent Fiji,” he stated.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against Brazil, Canada, and France. This tournament represents a major milestone for Fiji, showcasing the advancement of women’s football in the country and inspiring future athletes while uniting the nation in support of their football team on the international stage.
