Fiji’s Historic Leap: Women’s U20 Football Team Aims for Glory in Colombia

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship.

The President commended the team’s accomplishments and praised the hard work of the coaches, management, and young athletes. He noted that this is a historic achievement as it is the first time Fiji’s women’s team competes at such a prestigious event in Colombia, describing it as a commendable effort.

Fiji has built a reputation in rugby, but now the nation is drawing global attention for its successes in football. Ratu Wiliame highlighted Fiji’s ability to “punch above its weight” in international sports, pointing out the women’s football team is marking an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.

He acknowledged the various challenges the team faces, including limited funding and infrastructure, while also recognizing the dedication of the coaching and management staff in preparing the athletes physically and mentally. Ratu Wiliame expressed his gratitude for their commitment, stating, “What you have done is something else.”

The President also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, commending the team manager, Naziah Ali-Krishna, for her crucial role in the team’s journey. He assured continued support and prayers for the team and management as they represent Fiji on the world stage.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil, marking a significant milestone for the growth and development of women’s football in Fiji. This tournament is likely to inspire future athletes and unite the nation in support of its team.

– August 31: 6pm Fiji vs. Brazil
