Fiji’s Historic Leap: U20 Women’s Team to Face the World

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of the FIFA World U20 Championship. The President praised the team’s achievements and acknowledged the hard work of the coaches, management, and the young athletes.

“This is a remarkable achievement, as this is the first time that Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, and it is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame said. Fiji, traditionally known for its rugby prowess, is now gaining recognition in football, with the President emphasizing that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” in the international sports arena.

He highlighted the nation’s success in sevens rugby and underscored that the women’s football team’s achievements signify an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history. However, Ratu Wiliame also acknowledged the challenges the team faces, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities.

He commended the coaching and management staff for their dedication in preparing the team both mentally and physically, expressing his gratitude for their commitment. The Head of State recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, and highlighted the pivotal role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.

“We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he stated. The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament is a significant milestone for Fiji and aims to inspire the next generation of athletes while uniting the nation in support of its football team on the global stage.

Fixtures in Medellín, Colombia (Fiji time) are as follows:
– August 31: 6 PM Fiji vs. Brazil
