Fiji’s Historic Football Journey: U20 Women Step onto World Stage!

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship presented a traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday.

The President commended the team’s achievements and expressed gratitude for the dedication of the coaches, management, and young athletes. “This is a remarkable achievement, marking the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious event in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia,” Ratu Wiliame stated, acknowledging the commendable efforts of the team.

Fiji, traditionally celebrated for its prowess in rugby, is now gaining global recognition in football. Ratu Wiliame highlighted that the nation has consistently “punched above its weight” in international sports, underscoring the significant chapter the women’s football team is opening in Fiji’s sporting history.

However, the President acknowledged the challenges the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and training facilities. He praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team both mentally and physically. “What you have done is something else,” he expressed, conveying his appreciation for their dedication.

He also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, while commending team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna for her vital role. “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you guide these young ladies representing Fiji,” he added.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a significant milestone for Fiji, promoting the growth of women’s football in the country and inspiring future generations of athletes while uniting the nation in support of its football team on the world stage.
