The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday. The President commended the team’s achievements and expressed gratitude toward the coaches, management, and the young players.
“This is a remarkable achievement, as this is the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, which is commendable,” Ratu Wiliame said.
Fiji, known for its success in rugby, is now gaining global attention through its progress in football. The President highlighted that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” in international sports. He reiterated the nation’s notable success in tournaments like sevens rugby and indicated that the accomplishments of the women’s football team signify a thrilling new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.
He acknowledged the challenges the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management team for their unwavering dedication in preparing the players both mentally and physically, expressing his admiration for their efforts.
The President recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families and noted the crucial role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. He pledged ongoing support and prayers for the team and management as they guide these young athletes representing Fiji.
The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament is a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the development of women’s football in the country and inspiring the next generation of athletes while uniting the nation in support of its team on the international stage.
