The Hindu Unity spiritual gathering in Fiji has been postponed due to inadequate preparation time after its event permit was recently reinstated. Organizers expressed their gratitude to the Commissioner of Police for the permit reconsideration but noted that the initial cancellation had disrupted all planning and logistics, making it unfeasible to organize a large-scale event on such short notice. They assured the community that while the gathering is delayed, it has not been canceled, and new dates will be announced soon.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission emphasized the importance of the right to freedom of religion and belief, urging the state to uphold these rights as delineated in Fiji’s constitution. FHRADC Commissioner Alefina Vuki reiterated that the constitution safeguards the right to practice religion in both public and private settings.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu approved the gathering’s permit after the organizers demonstrated readiness to comply with the Public Order Act. The Commission hopes that this scenario will lead to an affirmative outcome that respects both religious freedoms and community harmony.

This event’s postponement comes in a context of heightened awareness and calls for improved security measures following recent vandalisms at religious sites, such as the desecration at the Samabula Shiv Mandir. Such incidents have underscored the necessity of fostering community dialogue and understanding, enabling the diverse religious groups in Fiji to work towards peace and reconciliation.

The current circumstances provide an opportunity for religious communities to unite in their collective challenges and to promote discussions around respect for different faiths. Leaders hope these proactive measures can lead to a more inclusive society that embraces religious diversity and enhances community cohesion.

This focus on unity and cooperation amidst adversity reflects a shared aspiration for a harmonious Fiji, where all individuals, regardless of their faith, can worship freely and safely.
