Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad has praised the Indian High Commission for its commitment to promoting the Hindi language and culture within Fiji. This acknowledgment was made during his attendance at the Hindi Kavi Sammelan 2025, an event dedicated to World Hindi Day, where he recognized the contributions of renowned Hindi poets from Suva.

In his remarks, Prof. Prasad emphasized the profound historical connection between Fiji and India, highlighting how the Hindi language serves as a vital link between the two nations. “The relationship between Fiji and India is a historic bond,” he noted, adding that this bond has been further reinforced by the formal introduction of Hindi in Fijian Parliament.

The event included the launch of three Hindi books by author Uttra Gurdyal, showcasing a noteworthy effort to elevate Hindi literature in Fiji. This recognition of Hindi not only acknowledges the linguistic diversity in the nation but also affirms the cultural identity of the Indo-Fijian community.

In previous celebrations, such as the Ramayan Mela, Prof. Prasad underscored the importance of cultural ties, linking the narratives of Indian indentured laborers with their distinguished heritage. These efforts highlight a broader commitment to multiculturalism, aiming to sustain the rich traditions of various language-speaking communities in Fiji.

This celebration of World Hindi Day signals a hopeful future where cultural engagement flourishes, encouraging deeper connections and understanding among diverse communities. With the recognition of Hindi, Fiji continues to move towards a culturally rich landscape, promoting unity through shared heritage and language.

In summary, the event and the official introduction of Hindi in Parliament reflect significant progress in preserving cultural identity and fostering unity within Fiji’s diverse society. This initiative not only champions the Hindi language but also sets a positive precedent for future cultural collaborations, enhancing the appreciation for linguistic diversity in Fiji.
