Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has confirmed that serious concerns have emerged regarding the integrity of the Higher Education Review Report, which could prompt an internal independent review. This report, produced by the Higher Education Commission Fiji and an External Review Committee, evaluated three significant local universities: the University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University, and the University of Fiji.

Radrodro addressed Parliament, stating that questions have been raised about the report’s credibility, citing methodological flaws and the absence of a defined terms of reference. He suggested that the Commission might consider appointing an independent reviewer to reassess the report’s findings. “The process is still ongoing in terms of the question. The commission will have to continue reviewing this report with its own internal process,” Radrodro noted.

All three universities under review were given the report for commentary. Fiji National University has outright rejected the report, highlighting concerns about its credibility and methodology, alongside allegations of defamatory content against its senior leadership. The University of Fiji accepted the report but acknowledged minor factual inaccuracies. Meanwhile, the University of the South Pacific provided a professional rebuttal, claiming the report was methodologically weak and inadequate.

This developing situation underscores the ongoing need for transparency and accountability in Fiji’s education sector, aligning with broader initiatives aimed at enhancing educational quality and governance. Previous discussions have highlighted the importance of thorough evaluations in maintaining trusted educational standards, reinforcing a commitment to addressing integrity issues.

The commitment to re-evaluating the review process is a hopeful indicator of the government’s dedication to improving the higher education landscape in Fiji. By emphasizing fairness and objectivity in the review process, stakeholders aim to foster a more robust and credible educational environment for students.
