The high-profile trial of former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem is set to commence next Tuesday, as preparation details were outlined in the Suva High Court. This case, presided over by Chief Justice Salesi Temo, involves allegations of abuse of office and receiving corrupt benefits. The charges stem from a 2022 incident during Sayed-Khaiyum’s tenure as Acting Prime Minister, where it is alleged he signed a Deed of Variation allowing the government to cover Saneem’s tax obligations amounting to over $55,000 without the required approvals.

The prosecution, led by Hezekiah Nofaga, plans to present around 20 witnesses, including Lautoka High Court Master Preetika Priyadarshni Prasad, whose testimony is to be conducted in a closed court to maintain impartiality due to her previous role in the Attorney-General’s office. Significantly, the prosecution will rely extensively on caution interviews with both defendants. Defense lawyer Devanesh Sharma has not yet disclosed whether his clients will testify or remain silent during the trial.

Public interest in this case is substantial, reflecting larger concerns regarding governance and transparency in Fiji. As this legal proceeding unfolds, it provides an opportunity for the justice system to reinforce the principles of accountability and ethical conduct in public office. The trial’s outcomes may not only influence governance policies but also shape public confidence in the judicial and political systems. More broadly, this case serves as a reminder of the essential role of law in maintaining integrity within the ranks of government officials.

Justice Temo aims to hear from three witnesses daily, ensuring an efficient process. The trial, scheduled to begin on September 16, 2025, is poised to significantly impact public discourse around governance and ethics, potentially leading to reforms that emphasize transparency and accountability. Observers are hopeful that justice will be served, maintaining trust in institutions and setting a precedent for future governance practices.
