Fiji’s high jump star, Rusiate Matai, is celebrating a significant achievement after breaking the national record at the Bearcat Invitational in the United States. The 19-year-old Pacific Games gold medalist successfully cleared a height of 2.10 meters, surpassing the previous national record of 2.09 meters.
After seven months of rigorous training at Neosho County Community College, Matai expressed pride in his accomplishment and a determination to aim even higher. He stated, “Yes! I want to go higher than 2.10m. I want to set a new record that can last a very long time.” This ambition showcases his drive to not only maintain his place in athletics but to continue raising the bar for future athletes from Fiji.
Matai’s journey has been greatly supported by his family, particularly his grandparents and parents, who have provided encouragement and motivation from thousands of miles away. He previously claimed gold at the Fiji Finals while representing Balata College and achieved a jump of 2.03 meters at the 2023 Pacific Games held in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
