Seven years ago, Francis Lee became the general manager of the Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa, turning around the property’s fortunes and restoring it to its former glory as one of Fiji’s premier tourist destinations. Mr. Lee, with an impressive 40-year career in the hospitality industry and experience across 30 Shangri-La hotels worldwide, took on the challenge with confidence and enthusiasm.

The resort’s owners approached Mr. Lee seeking assistance in renovating and restructuring the property. Given the option to work in Maldives or Mauritius, he chose Fiji and has described it as “the happiest decision” of his career. Prior to this role, he managed the Hylandia by Shangri-La Hotel in Yunnan, China, and worked in various countries including Australia, China, and the Maldives.

Upon arriving in Fiji, Mr. Lee was inspired by the happy disposition of the Fijian people, which motivated him to create an enjoyable environment for visitors. One of his first initiatives was the development of a waterpark at the resort, a project that cost about $150,000. The waterpark has quickly become a major draw for both local and international guests, especially as it is offered free of charge, a rarity compared to similar attractions worldwide that typically charge entry fees.

Mr. Lee noted that this decision to provide the waterpark for free has proven beneficial, reinforcing guest loyalty and encouraging repeat visits. His focus extends beyond profit, as he emphasizes supporting the local community by hiring local staff and creating a relaxed atmosphere for both guests and locals.

This holistic approach not only delights visitors but fosters a sense of community spirit, leaving everyone involved gratified. Mr. Lee’s continued commitment to enhancing the resort experience echoes a hopeful message that prioritizing happiness can lead to sustainable success.
